Survive or Thrive?

Figure climbing stairs with Darwin Quote
So, GM are making ventilators.
(Personally, I think that’s a rather cruel way to describe the current Buick lineup, but there we go.)
Sadly, General Motors had to be forced into making ventilators.
Their CEO needed the President to command the company to do what an Italian fashion house (Armani, no less) decided to do, voluntarily.
GM on the back foot. Again.
Think about that. How great would it have been if straight out of the gate, GM had PIVOTED to meet the nation’s call to produce masks and ventilators with a small tag that read “Made with love and care from the folks at Flint, Michigan”?
And so, we begin to see two very distinct kinds of companies: those who are aware and agile, and those who are lumbering, praying it will all end soon.
I fear, it will not. I don’t think “by June, it’ll all be OK.”
I truly believe we are at a very scary time.
And, not coincidentally, at a fascinating time.
I read that schools could be cancelled for the rest of 2020. That sporting events will be cancelled, for the rest of the year.
If so, what the HECK do we do???
Think different.
I am working in Pensacola, FL, and witnessing the disparity between these two groups of companies. Outside some closed stores, read signs like: “Closing our doors to flatten the curve.”
To “flatline,” you mean.
Yet others are pivoting.
They’re going out onto the curb. (One bar/ restaurant not 100 yards from the offices of DigiPro I spoke with reported their numbers for March are actually UP on March of last year.)
They’re thinking: How do we serve our food to families? Can we send “meal kits” out to moms so the whole family can have a (kinda) fun way of preparing the meal, with kid-involvement and less stress for the parents? How do we look after the elderly? How do we service those (40 million) folks with sight or hearing impairment, who don’t find it easy to order food or goods online?
Others are recognizing that with the “social distancing,” dating is a little tough, so why not combine a dating app with your food delivery, and all the inventive extras that could follow: selected wine, mood music etc.
If you’ll forgive the pun, the “take out” here, is “how do we serve our loyal customers in this brand new, crazy upside-down world?”
If you start ASKING yourself that question, as a business owner, you’re already halfway there. And, way ahead of your competitors.
If you ACCEPT that this situation will not change anytime soon, but instead of thinking about all the many negatives,
you think of what the OPPORTUNITIES are.
Businesses will undoubtedly fail.
But I’ll bet many businesses will not just survive but thrive.
“As you think, so shall you be.”
